Meeting in Rio de Janeiro articulates media from Global South before BRICS Summit Media representatives and journalists from countries of the Global South will gather in Niteroi, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, to take part in the BRICS Press Meeting, an event dedicated to strengthening media integration and collaboration among communicators from these nations in building a multipolar world.

Organised by the Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS, together with the TV Comunitária de Brasilia, the event will take place on 4 July, two days prior to the official start of the BRICS Summit. TV BRICS will serve as the international media partner covering the event. The programme will address topics such as independent journalism, the role of the media in consolidating a multipolar order, the development of communication networks in the Global South, and the cultural relevance of BRICS in journalistic production.

According to Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian newspaper Toda Palavra, Luiz Augusto Erthal, hosting the meeting on the eve of the leaders’ summit represents a strategic opportunity for collaboration among media professionals from these countries. “The BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro is a great opportunity for independent journalists from these [Global South] countries, now gathered in Brazil, to come together and create synergy for the formation of free and democratic information networks that are representative of the global majority,” he stated.

Beto Almeida, director of TeleSUR in Brazil, a partner of TV BRICS, highlighted the need for the group to consolidate its own model of international communication, based on multilateral cooperation. “It is essential that BRICS […] also organise itself to plan a cooperative global communication model in order to convey the information and values that underpin the building of a multilateral world,” he said.

The event will take place at the historic Solar do Jambeiro, from 10:00 to 18:00 (Brasilia time), and is supported by the news portal Brasil 247, the BRICS Study Centre at the Federal Fluminense University (NuBRICS), the Aleksander Pushkin International Association, among other institutions.
