Brazil and Zimbabwe Discuss BRICS Membership and Future Cooperation

Zimbabwe and Brazil have taken a significant step in advancing diplomatic and economic cooperation, with high-level discussions focused on Zimbabwe’s formal application to join the BRICS group of emerging economies.

The talks were held in Harare between Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, and Brazil’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Vilmar Rogeiro Coutinho. Speaking after the meeting, Professor Murwira stated that both sides reviewed ongoing cooperation and outlined future areas of collaboration. He highlighted the importance of Brazil’s expertise in agriculture and agrotechnology, sectors that align closely with Zimbabwe’s national development priorities.

“Brazil, to us, has an extremely strong and excellent attitude of cooperation, especially South-South cooperation. Brazil is a very strong country in that, and it aligns very well with Zimbabwe’s vision, as expressed by President Mnangagwa, of making sure that we make a better world,” he said.

The dialogue included an update on Zimbabwe’s application for membership in BRICS. Professor Murwira confirmed that Brazil had offered guidance on the procedural steps required for Zimbabwe’s accession and expressed optimism about the progress being made.

“We also discussed Zimbabwe’s formal application to be associated with BRICS in the categories that are deemed fit within BRICS,” he said. Brazil’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Vilmar Rogeiro Coutinho, in his turn, reiterated Brazil’s willingness to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors.

“We will also try to deepen our cooperation in many other areas, including multilateral areas. [...] The interest of Zimbabwe in joining the BRICS, that we are now working on this, hopefully to come to a successful conclusion on this matter very soon,” he said. Earlier, Vietnam became the tenth BRICS partner country.
